The Jane Hotel ligger så långt bort i West Village man kan komma utan att hamna på West Side Highway. Har aldrig lyckats ta mig dit förut, men en väns födelsedagsfest är ju en himla bra ursäkt. Det är ett gammalt sjömanshotell och efter Titanic sjönk så bodde de överlevande där tills utredningen var klar. Nu är dekoren väldigt eklektiskt, lite Marocko-inspirerat med uppstoppade små apor och så, och eftersom födelsedagsbarnet hette Julie Gilhart var stället denna kväll fyllt med NYs modeelit. Julie bjöd på Budweiser, popcorn, kakor från Momofuku och en film — 108º South — som handlar om äventyraren Jeff Johnsons resa till Chiles Patagonien, ett homage till hans hjältar Yvon Chouinard (grundare av Patagonia) och Doug Tompkins (grundare av North Face och Esprit), som gjorde samma mytomspunna tripp på 60-talet. Filmen innehåller massa vacker natur, surfing, klättring, segling och äventyr, allt som får en att seriöst omvärdera sitt eget förhållande till världen vi lever i. Vid mitt soffbord i screening-rummet satt bl.a. Anne Slowey, Cecilia Dean och Maria Cornejo. Även Erin Wasson (i fin vit jumpsuit), Lauren Bush (med en FEED bag såklart) och Rogan Gregory (som med sin hästsvans och sitt skägg så ut som många i filmen) var där. Efter filmen åt jag en alldeles för stor kaka, sa hej hej och köpte innan hemgång en taco från en taco truck på W 14th St.

The Jane Hotel is about as far you can get in the West Village before ending up on the West Side Highway. I’ve never made it there before, but a friend’s birthday party is a fine excuse to go. It’s an old sailor’s hotel, and after The Titanic sank the survivors stayed there until the investigation was done. Now, the space is very eclectically decorated, a bit Morocco-inspired with stuffed little monkeys and such, and since the birthday girl’s name was Julie Gilhart the place was filled with NYC fashionables. Julie served up Budweiser, popcorn, cookies from Momofuku and a movie — 180º South — about adventurer Jeff Johnson’s trip to Chile’s Patagonia, an homage to his heroes Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia, the clothing line) and Doug Tompkins (founder of The North Face and Esprit), who made the same mythical journey in the 60s. The film features tons of beautiful nature, surfing, climbing, sailing and adventure, all of which make you seriously rethink your relationship with the world in which we live. At my coffee table in the screening room sat, among others, Anne Slowey, Cecilia Dean and Maria Cornejo. I also spotted Erin Wasson (in a pretty white jumpsuit), Lauren Bush (clutching a FEED bag), and Rogan Gregory (who with his beard and ponytail carried a strong resemblance to many characters in the movie). After the film I ate a way-too-big cookie, said my byebyes and, before heading home, picked up a taco at the taco truck on W 14th St.
