This is one of the shows I wish I would have seen live—just to see the movement of the fabric. I’ve written about Costello Tagliapietra before, commending their use of the waterless AirDye technique. They also won the CFDA/Lexus Eco-Fashion Challenge a few months back.

I love the bright colors, simple cuts and slight Mad Men-goes-disco vibe. These talented two have a very bright fashion future ahead of them.

I was too lazy/busy to go to any NYFW shows this time, but luckily I have some fabulous friends I can always trust to give me the scoop. Thanks Emma & Starre for great coverage of the Organic by John Patrick show.

Love the yellow coat, the chunky hand knit sweaters and the African-inspired beaded belts.

Very excited to hear that John Patrick used Sourcemap to show where his materials come from. Would love to see more designers do this — transparency is the future!

It’s good to see H&M doing more and more environmentally responsible efforts. They’re nowhere near perfect, of course, but this new Conscious Collection shows a long term commitment to using more sustainable materials (read more about that here) such as organic cotton, Tencel and recycled polyester.

“It’s not just about organic cotton any more, the possibilities for creating a complete fashion statement with eco smarter materials are huge now. By designing recurring Conscious Collections we have the opportunity to show in a variety of ways what’s possible using more sustainable fabrics,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s Head of design.

These are my faves from the Conscious Collection (I must-must-must have those crochet shorts!), which will be available in all H&M stores starting April 14.

Her husband won a Golden Globe (Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama) last night, but Livia Firth is the one to really bring it home on the red carpet. She has challenged herself to only wear sustainable fashion in all her public appearances, and you can follow her journey on her Green Carpet Challenge blog.

The dress was designed by Jeff Garner of Prophetik and made from Tussah silk (more commonly referred to as Peace Silk) — which does not kill the silkworm in the process, unlike normal silk. There’s a bit too much gathering at the waist for my taste, but I think it suits Livia gorgeously, and that’s the point. I do love how the color of it changes with the lighting.

On the Green Carpet Challenge blog, Livia writes:

Where do you stand on silk worms? I have to say I’m not overly moved by the “cruelty” issue with conventional silk — they are just worms, or am I being heartless? But what I do love is that it is produced without the chemicals and waste inherent in normal silk production. It also gives a stunning lustre.

So add to this eco silk some hemp and we have a truly hippie fibre. And even more exciting (I think!) Jeff has revived natural indigo dyeing. He’s even grown his own Indigo Plant which takes us back to the 1800s, before someone discovered a synthetic substitute which resulted in destroying rural Indian economies — where natural indigo had sustained people for generations.

The thing I really appreciate about Jeff is that he thinks very deeply about problems in the fashion chain such as the heavy chemical pollution associated with dyeing and comes up with a considered response. His understanding of ecologically intelligent fabrics and processes is as extraordinary as his respect for the natural world.

What’s not to love there?

All five bags are made from recycled army fabric.

They are rugged and delicious and make me feel like running off to live on a remote beach somewhere in California.

You would never know at first glance, but these ties are made from old cassette tapes. The material, by Sonic Fabric, is just gorgeous — such a pretty sheen.

Not only does it look cool, it’s audible too! That’s right, the sounds contained in the weave can be revealed by drawing a tape head over its surface.

Christian Louboutin’s ecotrash pump is back. This time with a peep-toe and leopard heel. Since it’s made from trash, each pair is one of a kind. All of them, however, have a 6″ (150mm) heel. Eco-sexy! Or, maybe not..?

I really wish the King of the Red Soles hadn’t decided to use PVC — there’s definitely nothing eco about that.

Like so many other times when mainstream fashion brands try to do the eco-thing, I’m torn. These shoes do make a good statement, but fall very short in the eco-credibility department. I guess, if you do decide to buy a pair (which will set you back, oh, $1095), make sure to wear them to all the important holiday parties you will be attending — to strike up conversations about our wasteful consumption habits. Just make sure your kids or dogs don’t chew on the toxic PVC…

For her fiftyRX3 project, Danyelle documented what she wore every day for a year, with a goal of averaging 50% sustainability based on the environmental mantra ‘reuse, reduce, recycle.’ It was one of the original daily outfit and eco-fashion blogs and even though she concluded the project about four years ago, it still garners plenty of attention worldwide.

I think she can do it. Could you?
