10/10/10

The planet is hot, yes. But guess what? Activism is even hotter! 10/10/10 was a big Global Work Party, organized by awesome non-profit 350.org. Read my Goodlifer post about it here.

In Port Elizabeth, South Africa, African Penguins, rehabilitated victims of oil pollution, are released back into the sea in front of hundreds of participants. So adorable!

In Wellington, New Zealand, community members performed a “Solar Panel Boogie” at sunrise.

In Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, participants in a climate festival formed a giant ‘350.’

In Oslo, Norway, activists relax outside the famous new Opera House in Oslo after a bike race around the city.

In Shangri-La, China, concerned citizens gathered at the temple to promote the spiritual connection to preserving the earth, its climate and its people, and spelled out ‘350’ in prayer flags.

In Baku, Azerbaijan, kids broke out the power drills to promote solar power as a solution to climate change. Kids with power drills! Hells yeah!

In New York City, The Columbia University Marching Band forms a ‘350’ on the field.

And Swedes will not be outdone! In Stockholm, activists dressed up in sun, wind and water costumes thanked people in the subway for choosing public transport and invited them to participate in the other activities taking place at Sergels Torg, the central square.

SWEDES AT BOWERY ELECTRIC

Concrete Flower: 101010: Bowery Electric

The weather was lovely on Friday — perfect for spending the evening in a subterranean night club, in other words.

I arrived before my friends, went to the bar and ordered a Hoegaarden. Figured it was a good time to test the “weisßbier does not give you a hangover” hypothesis.

I never order hard liquor, it means too much trouble.

We had come because my friend Karen (who’s only half Swedish, the other half Brazilian) was playing this evening.

She’s been touring the U.S. with Swedish musician Moneybrother.

They were a good mix of red and blue. Every musician should have a hot female base player.

Afterward, there was lots of more beer, and tequila shots in the cave-like VIP room. Then, Moneybrother, his giant suitcase and I went to Kenmare for some more beers with another Swede and a German — expats unite. Things were a bit blurry at this point, so no more photos were taken, but I still managed to loose my lens cap, gaah!

Fun night. The weißbier hypothesis proved true. And I had this song in my head all of next day.

TWEED + LEATHER

Concrete Flower: 101009: Tweed + Leather

Friday was denim day at work, a very special occasion since it’s the only time we’re allowed to wear jeans to the office.

I bought this blazer on sale a few years ago. Love the leather detailing on the inside of the sleeves — a great way to make tweed a bit less serious.

I love everything from Loup Charmant. And I adore this collage. Every girl should have at least one pair of bloomers!

21 HOURS IN DALLAS

Concrete Flower: 101008: 21 Hours in Dallas

I spent all of 21 hours in Dallas this week. Hour 0: Grabbed a taxi at the airport.

Concrete Flower: 101008: 21 Hours in Dallas

Watched the sun set through the trees as we hit the road, windows wide open. “You want AC or you want fresh air?” the cab driver said. “Fresh air, please.” I said, wondering to myself how fresh this Texas airport air could really be.

Hour 0.5: Getting closer to the city, the sun is almost down.

Hour 1: Hello Fairmont mini-bar. You will remain untouched because your prices are far too outrageous.

Concrete Flower: 101008: 21 Hours in Dallas

Hello fluffy hotel bed. I laid down and watched TV for a bit, seems like a must when you arrive at a hotel room by yourself.

Hour 2: Spent at the hotel gym. Hour 3: Spent patting myself on the back for going to the gym. And taking a shower. Hour 4: Room service dinner arrives, spring pea risotto with morels, artichokes and parmesan — a disappoinment (there was like a half a morel in there). There was warm bread and a little surprise dessert though, that makes me happy.

Hour 5: One last look out the window before lights went out. That billboard with the huge woman’s face creeped me out more than once. Hour 5.5-13: Sleep.

Concrete Flower: 101008: 21 Hours in Dallas

Hour 13: Good morning Dallas. Watched some morning-TV. Hour 14-17: Worked at the hotel. Hour 17-19: At the meeting I came for.

Concrete Flower: 101008: 21 Hours in Dallas

Hour 20: A sub at the airport gate. Hour 21: Goodbye Dallas, I feel like we barely got to know eachother.
