“I like it when a flower or a little tuft of grass grows through a crack in the concrete. It’s so fuckin’ heroic.” — George Carlin
There’s beauty all around us, wherever we are, we just need to open our eyes to it. In Swedish en asfaltsblomma — a concrete flower — describes someone who grows up under difficult conditions, often with abusive or absent parents. Regardless of their hardships, these kids find something or someone that helps them through, and learn to flourish — like a flower bursting through concrete.
Despite the negative connotations, I think it’s a beautiful metaphor for finding beauty in the urban jungle.
