NOVEMBER 29

Today, I’m going to party like it’s my birthday. Because it is!

This pic from last year, when my man took me to Candle 79 for yummy vegan dinner, and then to see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall (which was good tacky fun). I like to let him pick the place — it’s more fun that way. So… let’s see where I end up celebrating tonight.

It’s been a very nice day so far: breakfast in bed, Mexican lunch with my aunt and uncle, cupcake celebration at work, lots of phone calls (singing ones too) and 100-some FB birthday wishes. Love Y’all. xoxo

FORT DEFIANCE

For southern home cooking and a good dose of genuine atmosphere, Fort Defiance in Red Hook is a good lunch or brunch tip.

Red Hook is one of those very New York-y neighborhoods that you can’t really reach by public transit (unless you count the IKEA bus, because this is where the furniture giant is as well). Maybe because of that, it’s got a very unique character, and many good restaurants (and wine shops).

I had a very good sandwich, and a classic New York drink — an egg cream (which, curiously, contains neither egg nor cream but is a mix of seltzer, milk and chocolate syrup).

Fort Defiance is on 365 Van Brunt Street (at the corner of Dikeman), in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Check it out!

MY T-GIVING

I started the day with cleaning up, since my aunt and uncle were arriving from Sweden later in the day. I foolishly said that I would pick them up at Newark Airport, without giving so much as a thought to the possibility of a traffic chaos. I left the house at 1pm, thinking I would be there at 1:45 (with little or no traffic it’s a 25-minute trip). Three hours later, I finally rolled up in front of the terminal. What a terrible host!

On top of that, we had had no time to cook a turkey or do any of that Thanksgiving stuff, so we went out for a very non-traditional meal at Aurora in Williamsburg. Very good, but we were all pooped, me from the stress of a four-hour traffic jam (three there + one hour on the way back, when I scared my Swedes by cutting through two lanes of traffic to get in the EZ Pass lane before the Holland Tunnel), they from good-old jet lag. After a refreshing stroll home, we slept very well. Turkey coma indeed — even though I didn’t eat any, I blame the bird!

Bad iPhone pics because I was so beat I forgot to put the memory card in the camera…

A DAY IN SWEDEN

Concrete Flower: 101127: A Day in Sweden

I woke up, got dressed and walked outside, headed toward my grandparents’ house. The ground was just dusted with snow, grass showing through.

I was treated to a nice fika, with some almond cake and a saffron bread.

It started snowing, just before I headed off to a nice pampering at the spa. Outside, they had pretty lights in the bushes.

Then I met up with my sister to go see my dad at work. Outside the door to his office was these cool old school weights.

We finished with a lovely dinner, and that was about it.
