NO MAKEUP

Concrete Flower: 101021: No Makeup

Some of my friends took part in a No-Makeup Challenge a while back, organized by the awesome site No More Dirty Looks. Seriously, you should check it out. And read the book.

We all (hopefully) care so much about what we eat, but then we’re putting toxic stuff on our biggest organ — our skin — every day. Not good. Clean up your beauty routine, or go au naturel for a while!

I rarely wear much makeup, but this is how I look without any at all.

MY SEPTEMBER

My September started out in Hawaii, took me back to NYC for a while, for NYFW and The GreenShows. Then I was off again to L.A., Sky Farm and the Mojave Desert. Sometimes I get depressed because nothing fun seems to be happening, but then I realize that life is fucking good.

A DAY OF (CREATIVE) SERVICE

Concrete Flower: 101020: Mural Painting

Yesterday I took part in a community outreach project in The Heights.

We painted a mural on a previously dull, brown wall in the school yard.

Using low-VOC paint from Green Depot, because we do not want to poison kids with toxic paint fumes, do we?

The day before, a track and some turf had been installed. There used to be nothing but a concrete slab for these kids to play on.

The school is named after Duke Ellington, so the inspiration was the joy of music and play.

Though happy colors on a wall may not change the world, it gives the kids at this school something positive to look at every day — a small change in a small part of the city. But, we have to start somewhere and maybe, just maybe, we were able to sow some seeds of change and positively motivate the little cuties at this school?

I fell asleep exhausted (hands still covered in dried paint), but happy, knowing that I did something good.

DAD’S PANTS

Concrete Flower: 101018: Dad's Pants

These pants used to belong to my dad, before they found a new home in my closet.

Concrete Flower: 101018: Dad's Pants

I’ve had the belt since my pre-teen days.

The transparent top with a strategically placed opaque panel was bought at H&M like 15 years ago.

The tuxedo jacket is a baby in comparison, perhaps only 3 years old.

There’s a Swedish saying — den som spar hon har — that would translate to something like “she who saves, has.” I’m a firm believer.

BIKE RIDE + SUNSHINE

Concrete Flower: 101017: Bike Ride + Sunshine

Today was such a perfect New York Sunday — sunny and breezy. I decided to take a bike ride around Williamsburg.

Nothing annoys me more than people who ride their bikes like idiots. I decided that I should give all us two-wheeling citizens a good rep by being an exemplary bike rider, stopping at red lights and obeying all traffic rules.

I stopped in East River Park to lay in the grass and read the paper for a while.

The view of Manhattan is gorgeous.

The wind in my hair and the sun on my face felt so good that I forgot about everything else, including traffic behavior. On the last turn before getting back to my house, I made a sweeping turn to the left, only to have a car stop, breaks screeching, about a foot away from me. For a moment, I had become the embodiment of an idiot on two wheels.
