THE FALL FEAST

Concrete Flower: 101017: Fall Feast

Friday night, I went to a dinner party at the Art Director’s club. It was really the afterparty for The Feast Conference. I could not attend but followed it via livestreaming all day. The theme for the dinner was fall.

There was lots of yummy food by local purveyors. Really good fish, bread, cheeses and, served inside those tiny orange pumpkins, the best pumpkin soup I’ve ever had.

There was banjos, laughs and dancing.

And a pretty Mezcal table.

The people who had donated the food were very excited to talk about it, none more so that the wine guys, who jumped up onto a table.

Each table had colored pencils, for brainstorming worldchanging ideas. We did mostly girly doodles, but who says love can’t change the world?

At ten, it was time to go home. All week, I had waited for the moment when I would be home, in my bed, knowing I could just sleep in and not have to get up early the next morning. It was divine.

FRIDAY FIND: CHAU HAR LEE

Concrete Flower: 101015: Chau Har Lee

This Friday’s Find — the awesomest shoes I’ve seen this week — comes from London-based designer Chau Har Lee.

Via JC Report: After winning ITS8 Competition and the Manolo Blahnik Competition RCA in 2009, British designer Chau Har Lee received praise for her eccentric approach to shoe design. A graduate of Cordwainers and the Royal College of Art, Lee’s thorough knowledge has allowed her to explore and push the boundaries of conventional design, resulting in highly conceptual and architectural pieces of art that hinge on commercial practicality.

Hot!

I’m going to keep dreaming, but should you want to acquire a pair they are available at Selfridges London on a made-to-order basis.

MEMPHIS THEORY

Concrete Flower: 101014: Memphis Theory

During my trip back from spending 21 hours in Dallas, I had a stopover in Memphis. Of course the flight to JFK was delays, and of course there was an Elvis-themed store at the airport.

There, The King lives on, in mosaic form.

Above was a ceiling fixture that resembled a UFO. Conclusion: Elvis is not dead. He was abducted by Aliens (kind of like the guy in Slaughterhouse-Five, a book I happened to be reading at this very time) and turned into a stone mosaic! Was I bored? Yes, very.

THE OLD LEO SCARF

Concrete Flower: 101014: The Old Leo Scarf

I’ve had this scarf for as long as I can remember. See, I’ve always had a thing for leopard prints, and now that they’re suddenly all the rage again I’m all set! I think it was my grandmother’s, but I can’t really remember.

DESERT FLASHBACK: 29 PALMS INN

Concrete Flower: 101013: 29 Palms Inn

After waking up on that Sunday in the desert, we headed to 29 Palms Inn for brunch. The Inn has been around since 1928 and has been known to attract a celebrity or two.

We did not park in the lawn mower parking. But, we did check out the on-site farm, where much of the produce (as much as you can reasonably produce in the desert) for the restaurant is grown.

There was a hammock. I love hammocks!

There were also grapes, most of which had shriveled on the vine and almost turned into raisins because of the heat. These were the pretty ones.

The atmosphere is refreshingly laid-back, and the room (bugalow, really) rates are pretty affordable.

This cute one is called Gold Park, has two queen beds, a sun porch, a hammock and could be yours for a night for between $90-175, depending on the season.

Despite the heat, we decided to enjoy our brunch outside, by the pool.

Concrete Flower: 101013: 29 Palms Inn

It was yummy.

We also had mimosas, a weekend-must, before we headed off to Joshua Tree National Park. Great start to a great day.

See my other desert posts here, here, here and here.
